Recently, I had a conversation with two friends that got me thinking about dreams and aspirations. One friend just got back from a writer’s conference, on cloud nine because she’s publishing her first book Her dream is coming true, and it’s truly inspiring to see her hard work pay off.
On the flip side, another friend is feeling lost. She doesn’t know what God’s calling her to do, what dream she’s supposed to chase. She’s searching, but it feels like she’s stuck in the fog, waiting for the sun to break through.
My Story
And then there’s me. I’ve felt like my dream has hit a wall. It seems like nothing’s happening, and my limitations are holding me back.
I’m currently enrolled in a coaching class on how to ask good questions. I applied the principles to a familiar but somewhat challenging area – my hopes and dreams. I’m not a natural dreamer. I try to resist thinking about what I want so I won’t get disappointed. But I was motivated to take another approach.
I began by making a list of my thoughts and desires, then proceeded to declutter, much like tidying a cluttered closet. With each desire, I talked with God, treating them as clothing to be examined against my identity in Him. God served as my full-length mirror, and I chuckled as I presented each item, trying them on for size. Some were swiftly discarded, while others asked me, “Why did I ever stop wearing these?” I carefully scrutinized any reluctance, distinguishing between genuine caution and baseless apprehension.
As I was doing this two thoughts occurred to me
- Sorting through my closet of thoughts and desires is a lot more fun with God, like a gentle friend who tells you the truth.
- Maybe what feels too hard is just waiting for a fresh view – from God’s eyes.
But wait, how do I know what God wants?
- I don’t want to be self-centered and selfish
- I don’t want to make a wrong decision
- I don’t want to …
What do you want Lord? Why don’t you tell me what to do like You did with Abraham, Noah, Moses …
You gently answered
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4
Next
I took a break from writing my thoughts and went for a walk about the house and neighborhood, thanking God for every single thing I could think of and observe. I filled my heart with music and Scriptures while encouraging my spirit, soul, and body to worship Him.
Then I returned to my journal and wrote:
Lord, when I focus on You first, the path becomes clearer. As I gave thanks for everything around me, I realized You are always with me and my fears started to melt away. You show me one step at a time.
Your Turn:
Here’s a simple two-step tip for discovering God’s dream for you:
- Fill Yourself with God Thoughts: Write down who God is and what He means to you. I have lists—lots of them! I walk around all day reciting these truths out loud, sharing them with friends, and especially talking to God about them.
- Ask God to Reveal Your Dream: Once you’re filled with His truths, take a moment to pause and ask God, “How do You want these truths to be expressed in my life?” This is where the dream part comes in. As Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
And let us know what you discover.
Thank you for joining me on this journey.
Dancing, and dreaming on God’s path.
Excellent advice on how to “process” your life’s purpose and direction. Walking with the Lord, thinking it through with Him, and journaling it is a wonderful journey to what “really counts.” Love the cleaning the closet analogy!
