Have you ever seen a television show where they say “Don’t try this at home?” My husband watches shows such as “Top Gun” or “Myth Busters” where they say that at the beginning of the show. I remember as a child seeing shows where the stunt man Evil Kenevil would do dangerous trick and they would warn us not to try it on our own.
Today I was thinking about the life we live in God and how easy it is to try to do it on our own. We are so grateful for all God has done in dying for us so we could have a relationship with a Holy God.
I think the clearest way for me to really start living this way is to see how Jesus was dependent on the Spirit. Why would we, Jesus’ followers think we could do anything in his name, apart from being dependent on the Holy Spirit? Sure we can think that way when we go on a mission trip or pray for someone to be healed, but what about our everyday life? What about the choices that seem hard to make or the relationships you would rather avoid? Is there strength for regular life in the Kingdom?
Romans 13:14 says “…clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.” Our tendency is to go directly to the last part of the verse and skim over the first part which is actually the power to do what is being said. We are funny creatures!
Take a few minutes to meditate on this verse and ask God to enlighten your heart to the many times today You can choose to not attempt things on your own, but rather dependant on our all-powerful God.
